Event description

Description

Temperance Hall, completed in 1888 as a double-storey lodging and lecture hall, is now home to one of Australia’s leading dance and interdisciplinary arts companies, Phillip Adams BalletLab. Temperance Hall is both the city’s newest contemporary art and performance venue for creation, residency, exhibition and performance, as well as an iconic South Melbourne building with a rich history. The Emerald Hill Total Abstinence Society — one of the influential Temperance movements that shaped social life in 19th century Melbourne — built a hall on this site in 1863. As well as the Abstinence Society, the hall was used by many social clubs, political parties and societies, and hosted alcohol-free concerts, dances and performances. Anthill Theatre made the space their home in the 1980s and from that point, the building has had an association with the performing arts. Working Heritage has managed the hall since 2012. Temperance Hall is the first artist-led interdisciplinary complex in Australia comprising a main hall, studios, and residential apartment. It is an experimental home for Phillip Adams BalletLab to make and present work alongside others through a curatorial framework shaped by the Artistic Director, Phillip Adams.
