Activities

Come along anytime between 9:30am and 3pm to experience our Open Air Science Lab. Located in the Telethon Kids carpark, Hamilton Street and Mueller Park, the lab is full of activities for kids of all ages and a program of performances and demos live on stage.

Here's a taste of what's on offer:

  • Conduct your very own science experiment by extracting DNA from strawberries
  • Learn about how the lungs work and make your own set of balloon lungs
  • See how vaccines help to beat the bugs on our obstacle course
  • Join our talking circle and learn about Aboriginal culture
  • Plus Face painting, Fat Cat, Scitech and much more.

Feedback from parents:

  • "Brilliant event for all ages! Thanks."
  • "I just wanted to thank you for organising such an outstanding Telethon Kids Discover Day today. We all had an absolutely wonderful time, really enjoyed each of the stands and learned a lot from the very helpful and friendly researchers."
  • "Congratulations to the Institute for the wonderful work you do for society and for coordinating such a wonderful and informative day today. "

FAQs:

Is it really free?

Absolutely, our event is to help provide educational and fun science activities for the Perth community. As a not-for-profit, there is a option to support our research through a donation when registering your attendance or on the day. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on the day.

If it's free, why do I need to register?

We won't turn anyone away on the day, but free registration helps us organise such a big event in many ways:

  • It helps ensure we don't go over-capacity for our inside activities.
  • It helps us better plan for our outside activities and events outside on Hamilton Street and Mueller Park.
  • It gives us the ability to keep you updated via email in the weeks leading up to the event with important information like parking options.
  • It ensures your name and email is recorded for our Discover Day prize draws.

How do I get there? What bus/train to catch? Is there parking available?

There will be limited parking available on the day and the event is easily accessible via public transport. There will be reserved bays for ACCROD parking on Hamilton Street. For more information on this, see Getting to Discover Day.

Who should attend Discover Day?

We would recommend families with children aged 4 to 12 years for the event however younger and older are both welcome and will certainly find something that interests them. We will have a Mother’s Room with baby changing facilities for those with babies and younger kids.
Please note that all children require supervision from a parent or guardian at all times at the event. Discover Day is a pet-free and smoke-free event.

Are there food/coffee/EFTPOS/ATMs available?

We will have multiple food and coffee options on the day, some will have eftpos and some will be cash only. Unfortunately we won't have an ATM on-site.
Given the beautiful location of Mueller Park, you and your family are also welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the outdoors.

What happens if it rains?

While rain is always a risk with any event hosting an "Open Air Science Lab", we will have a range of marquees placed throughout the event to provide protection.

Is there pram access at Discover Day?

Yes! Discover Day is a pram friendly event however due to crowds we recommend you don’t take your pram inside the Institute. There is pram parking available at the entrance.

Who can go on a lab tour?

To ensure we provide a fun and safe tour experience only adults and children over the age of 8 can take part in our pre-registered lab tours. Children between the ages of 8 and 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Can I donate to Telethon Kids Institute on the day?

You certainly can and we would really appreciate your support. We will have a few donation options available at Discover Day, or you can make an optional online donation when registering your ticket. Even a few dollars is greatly appreciated.
