Event description

Description

This fascinating behind the screen tour through our digital lives invites teens to explore “how things work” and answers some of the baffling questions about learning and living in the digital age.

Whether your child’s passion is technology or creativity this school holiday program is a wonderful way for them to be curious, use their imagination and think critically about technology and digital media.

The program is delivered by people working in the industry. Students will have the opportunity to meet journalists, cartoonists, game-developers, animators, product developers, entrepreneurs and more; all of whom are keen to share their enthusiasm and knowledge and encourage ‘Aha!’ moments as they reveal the science hidden below the surface of our digital lives.

Through challenges and hands-on activities, students are also encouraged to become creators rather than just consumers of digital media.

The Format:

The program is suitable for students aged 11-16 years (no technology or coding ability is required).

DAY 1 (THURSDAY):

  • "Memes, Zines or Toons"
What makes memes so catchy and how can cartoons improve society?
    (Creative Thinking Challenge)

  • "Insta-famous"
What can neuroscience tell us about presentation skills in the 'like' culture - from selfies to foodies?
    (Collaboration Challenge)

  • “YouTubers, the new social stars"
What makes a great story? Bloggers and vloggers from spectators to creators.
    (Idea Generation Challenge)

DAY 2 (FRIDAY):

  • "Yeezy shoes, lip kits or Vans"
How does advertising use psychology to persuade us to buy things we don’t need?
    (Communication Challenge)

  • "Virtual worlds and avatars"
The body in space - how can physics help us design for a virtual world?
    (Problem-Solving Challenge)

  • "The Fortnite phenomenon"
How do we teach values through game design? Can you use maths and physics to calculate the angle for a jump?
    (Critical Thinking Challenge)
