This free workshop for schoolteachers will review the recent socio-political developments in the European Union

About this event

This free one-day workshop for schoolteachers, Teaching the Teachers: What next for the EU and Australia in these challenging times? will review recent socio-political developments in the European Union (EU).

It will provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about the EU’s approach to tackling a broad range of issues, and will provide an opportunity to consider how these issues can be covered in learning and teaching activities, and integrated into the secondary school curriculum.

This workshop is a one-day intensive program for teachers of:

• History

• Global/International Politics

• Social and Cultural Studies

• Legal Studies

• Economics

This workshop will also provide a unique opportunity to engage with diverse expert speakers on topics that complement secondary school curricula.

  • Prof Bruno Mascitelli - Adjunct Prof, Swinburne University of Technology, Fmr President European Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand (ESAANZ)
  • Prof Bruce Wilson - Director EU Centre of Excellence at RMIT University
  • Mr Jaan Butler, VCE teacher in Politics, Coburg High School
  • Dr Emma Shortis – Lecturer and Research Officer at RMIT University, ABC TV Commentator, Host of the "Barely Getting' by" podcast
  • Dr Perparim (Rimi) Xhaferi - Research Officer and Team Leader at RMIT University, Expert on the politics of ethnicity, race and national identity in the Western Balkan region
  • Assoc Prof Gosia Klatt - Associate Professor, Continuing Vocational and Educational Policy Hub, and Associate Dean (Graduate Research), The University of Melbourne
  • Dr Matt Harvey – Senior Lecturer, College of Law & Justice, Victoria University

Themes covered:

• What does the EU stand for in the contemporary world?

• The Ukraine War

• EU enlargement

• The European Green Deal

• The Australia — EU Free Trade Agreement

• How can we integrate the EU and European Studies into the Secondary School Curriculum?

The program will feature interactive sessions with senior academics and practitioners, an interdisciplinary approach, and multiple case studies which can support learning in classroom settings.\

In person:

For those attending in person, this event will follow COVID-safe protocols.

Catering will be provided.

Online:

For those that want to attend via online, register now and the meeting link will sent closer to the date.

Cost:

Free but registration is essential.
