This workshop unpacks what self- regulation is, the theory behind it and practical strategies for your classroom.

About this Event

Self-regulation refers to the ability to maintain the appropriate level of alertness to match the situation. It involves having the ability to monitor and self-regulate behaviour, attention, social interactions and emotions.

The presenter will discuss:

Calming techniques, sensory supports and thinking strategies to assist self-regulation.

The range of commercial programs that assist with self regulation such as the Alert Program, Zones and the Incredible Five Point Scale.

Interoception (a lesser known sensory system) and the impact on self-regulation.

Games that assist with the development of appropriate behavioural and sensory strategies.

Executive functioning.

Evidence based practice and debate regarding self-regulation.

Intended Audience:

Early-childhood, Junior primary, primary teachers & special educators/ teachers.

Presenter:

Leanne Longfellow is a special education teacher, academic researcher and a parent of a young adult with disabilities. She has taught in a variety of special education settings over a thirty year period, provided numerous professional learning sessions for educators, presented at Australian and international educational conferences, taught education in a university context and recently completed her doctoral research in special education at UniSA in 2018.

Participants will receive:

  • A certificate of attendance referenced to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers ✳︎
  • Electronic handouts of the powerpoint, notes and suggested reading
  • Hard copies of the notes and templates.
  • Afternoon tea

✳︎ Completing this workshop will contribute two hours of professional learning addressing Standard 1:6 'Design and implement teaching activities that support the participation and learning of students with disability and address relevant policy and legislative requirements' from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher accreditation in South Australia.
