Improving Maths Education Outcomes in Schools: Teaching for Mastery

About this Event

The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) and Mathematics Education Innovation (MEI) in the UK are pleased to offer Australian maths educators a series of two webinars on Improving Maths Education Outcomes in Schools: Teaching Maths for Mastery.

The first webinar will look at the impact on maths education in England as a result of the wide-spread promotion and adoption of mastery teaching and learning practices. The second will focus on the detail of the structure and delivery of a mastery maths lesson in multiplicative reasoning at primary level.

Description

Past mathematics teaching practice in the UK, like Australia, often emphasised inquiry or topic based pedagogical approaches. Starting in 2015, linking with Shanghai Normal University, England’s National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) started to promote and introduce teaching for mastery practices to primary and secondary schools across England. These practices include more explicit teaching of mathematical concepts and their interconnectedness to ensure students acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The aim is to improve mathematics education outcomes for all students at all levels in maths.

Who should attend?

These webinars are suitable for school leaders, government representatives and maths educators who have an interest in education strategies and classroom pedagogical practices. This may include directors, managers and consultants who work in government, the Catholic and independent sectors. The webinars will be of particular interest to researchers, school leaders, heads of department and practising teachers.
