Seminar Title:
Teaching ‘Gateway’ Skills to Reading Success: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Decoding Instruction
A seminar for Teachers of Preschool, Reception, Year 1
Thursday, 11th October 2018
About this session: Research demonstrates that a child’s ability to manipulate the sound structure of spoken words (phonological awareness), to link these sound units to print (phonics), and then to apply this sound-symbol knowledge to decoding printed words is one of the most powerful indicators of how well they will learn to read and write in the first two years of schooling.
This workshop will specifically focus on ways in which educators can teach phonological awareness, phonics and decoding to both preschool-aged children and children in their first few years at school by drawing on research evidence of what works and what doesn’t, identifying and critically reviewing resources available to educators, and applying this knowledge to practical case examples, as well as participants’ own case-based scenarios.
Attendance certificates will be available for collection at the conclusion of the event. Please note, minimum numbers are required for this event to proceed.
