Teaching English to Adult Ezidi Learners
Event Information
About this Event
Come join us at the Minnie Barn for a free Professional Learning Workshop presented by Dr Liz Ellis, Adjunct Associate Professor of Linguistics at UNE. An Ezidi lunch will also be provided by the Minnie Barn Restaurant. All are welcome.
This workshop is tailored to volunteers who teach English to adult Ezidi community members, and others who may find the content relevant. It will be useful for volunteers who do not have EALD* training and are working one-to-one with a learner. The workshop will explore the key aspects of teaching English at low levels to speakers of other languages where there is no shared language with the teacher, and where the learner may or may not have literacy in their other language(s). There will be a balance of presentation, demonstration, Q and A and group work with teaching materials. Topics covered will include the following, in a fun and friendly learning atmosphere:
• Basic principles of adult EALD learning
• Learner needs
• Demonstration lesson
• Challenges of teaching English through English
• Deciding what to teach: relevance and frequency
• Getting meaning across: context, context, context
• Designing / adapting communicative tasks
• Useful materials
