TEA Teacher Skills Workshop – Being Creative with Fabric Manipulation
This course is designed for teachers implementing the Textiles and Design, Textile Technology, Design and Technology syllabi and is facilitated by experienced Textiles and Design teacher/s.
The Course will deliver detailed information and provide a hands on skills workshop to give participants a deep understanding of fabric manipulation techniques to create aesthetically pleasing designs.
In the first session teachers will be introduced to fabric manipulation techniques, using both hand needles and the sewing machine. Samples, illustrations and an overview of techniques suitable for student project work, such as gathering, pleating, folding, scrunching, stitching and stuffing will be covered.
In the following session a skills demonstration will be followed by the hands on making of samples to create a library of techniques for use in the classroom. Teachers will be encouraged to experiment with various fabric types to see and compare the different effects that can be achieved to alter the surface of fabrics.
The final session will incorporate tips for success in the classroom and discussions about teaching strategies will enable participants to further develop these activities for their classes. There will student friendly step by step instruction sheets provided for each technique that can be copied for use in the classroom.
The structure of the workshop provides the opportunity for teachers to enhance networking by working collaboratively with teachers to broaden their content knowledge, and be provided opportunities to take back new or different skills to improve their teaching practice.
