John Marston’s comedy asks us, is it good to be bad? What’s so hard about being good? Freevill, a hedonistic young playboy, is looking to end his affair with the courtesan Franceschina, and offers her to his moody and abstinent friend Malheureux. But Franceschina is more interested in revenge than moving on - and turning old friends into new enemies.

In 1605, The Dutch Courtesan was prefaced with this summary: “The difference betwixt the love of a courtesan and a wife is the full scope of the play, which intermixed with the deceits of a witty city jester, fills up the comedy”. Goodfellow Theatre Company is thrilled to bring this lesser known play of one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries to you in May 2020!
