Event description

Description

Our final Yoga Australia gathering for 2017 will be on Saturday November 4th, 12 -4 pm and all Yoga teachers are welcome to attend.

We will meet at the recently opened South Hobart Yoga and Medtation space (SHYAM), 14 Weld St , South Hobart (The beautiful old sandstone building half way along the street).

The program will include:

1) A sound workshop led by the highly experienced Satyamo (Judy Roberts)

This 90-minute workshop will explore the classical uses of ‘sound' within yogic practice, including mantra, pranayama, mouna, and listening to various sounds.
There will be discussion on the physiological, mental, and spiritual effects and benefits of including sound, and ways to implement sound when planning your class sequence.
The workshop will be partially experiential and partially theoretical, with time for questions, discussion, and ‘sharing’.

Satyamo (Judy Roberts) is a YA Senior Instructor and Yoga Therapist with over thirty years of yoga teaching experience. She is also a trained musician and Music Therapist. Over the past ten years or so, Satyamo has focussed on the use of sound and music in yoga (Nada Yoga), and now runs courses, workshops, and retreats combining 'classical yoga' with Nada Yoga and aspects of Music Therapy (www.yogasoundsong.com).

2) A discussion on the mentoring of yoga teachers guided by our Tassie YA rep Lynn Romeo
Yoga teaching can be quite an isolated profession. We often don't have enough time or opportunity to discuss issues with other teachers and share our wisdom. Our teachers' gatherings provide one such forum but sometimes we feel like we need more. Many professions have formal mentoring/supervision arrangements. YA has mentoring guidelines for teachers who are upgrading their qualifications but perhaps we can explore the possibility of a more extensive range of both formal and informal mentoring opportunities for all levels of teachers, throughout our lifetime as a teacher. Let's set the ball rolling here in Tassie in a guided discussion of what mentoring/supervision can offer and what it can look like. Maybe we can share any quirky, serious or light-hearted stories of times we have needed the support and wisdom of other teachers and where we have turned for inspiration. This discussion will help inform YA's next steps in this area.

Lynn Romeo is a senior teacher from the Gita Yoga tradition, is our Tassie rep on Yoga Australia National Management Committee (NMC), has a background in social work and has used various forms of supervision and mentorship throughout her 26 years of teaching and many more as a social worker. She is a passionate advocate for the role that regular mentoring can play in supporting us both personally and professionally, in keeping us open to both the inner and outer resources that are there for us to draw on in order to keep us teaching and expanding through all phases of life.

3) An opportunity to connect up with other teachers over a cupper (PLEASE BRING SOMETHING TO SHARE FOR AFTERNOON TEA)

Spaces are limited, please make sure to book via Eventbrite.
