Event Details

Sydney Coastal Councils Group and the NSW Branch of the Australian Coastal Society are proud to present the first in a series of professional development workshops for coastal managers.

This inaugural workshop forms a part of the 22nd annual NSW Coastal Conference being held this year in Port Macquarie.

The workshop will focus on community engagement in coastal planning and management, with the key aims to:

  • Build the capacity of coastal managers when engaging with coastal communities
  • Share learning on community engagement theory and best practice from around NSW
  • Share knowledge on how best to communicate what are often complex and challenging coastal risk issues

To achieve these aims we have arranged for case studies from three local councils to be presented. Presenters involved in coastal management in NSW will speak on their experiences, both good and bad, of communicating about coastal change, risk and potential management responses.

We will hear the perspectives of local media and elected community representatives. The day will conclude with a professionally facilitated participatory workshop where we’ll put the day’s learnings into practice. Using a typical coastal planning scenario, we’ll workshop community engagement practices and processes. This session will be led by Dr Sherie Coakes from Umwelt, a specialist social analysis and engagement practitioner. A synopsis of best practice will be collated and sent around to participants afterward.

Whether you’re coming along to the conference or not, don’t miss this opportunity to share your wisdom, collect new ideas, tell a few tales and improve your ability to connect with your audience.
