The Wendy White WoundCare team invites you along to our second one-day practicum for the 2019 calendar, 'Talking Debridement' with Wendy White & Friends.

The title for this October event is 'Wound Debridement: Changing theory into practical reality for the everyday clinician’.

The term 'wound debridement’ historically conjures up an image of a scalpel blade and forceps being used by an experienced clinician to remove eschar. This limited view may have contributed to a distancing by clinicians and their organisations to considering debridement as an integral component of local wound care today, having perceived that debridement is limited to only one tissue type, or limited to the specialist in practice.

In 2019, we want to change thinking about this thing called wound debridement. We want to support registered healthcare professionals and their organisations to ensure a variety of modalities are offered for the range of presenting tissues which require not only initial but follow-up maintenance debridement, as a component of everyday care. If we can enhance local wound management interventions as part of a comprehensive individualised approach that focus on and address non-viable, locally infected tissue & chronic inflammation, we create the opportunity to improve clinical outcomes and the lives of those in our care.

Stuck, stagnant, stunned wounds…wound debridement may be that missing link in practice interventions when healing is the clinical expectation. We need to make the option of providing wound debridement a clinical reality when risk has been found to be outweighed by the benefit.

Our learning objectives for this one-day WOUNDEd event are as follows:
1. Define the term ‘'wound debridement' based on current consensus & understanding.
2. Review the history of wound debridement practices to the present day.
3. Identify contemporary recommendations as to why debridement is an essential component of local wound care considering T.I.M.E, D.I.M.E, and Biofilm Based Wound Care (BBWC).
a. Non-viable and/or locally infected tissue including eschar, slough, fibrin, haematoma, friable granulation - biofilm local infection chronic wound.
4. Discuss ‘’10 Steps’’ to risk assessment considering knowledge acquisition, scope of practice, capable care and local policy/procedure.
5. Review debridement modalities - their clinical indication, precaution and contraindications.
a. Surgical, Conservative sharp (CSWD), Dressings, Mechanical, Myiasis and Enzymatic wound debridement
6. Participate in hands on practicum using simulated wound characteristics (including animal and vegetable) for the above modalities (Myiasis TBC).
a. CSWD debridement will include instrument selection & handling skills acquisition specific for the presenting tissue type.
7. Reflect on current practice gaps, and consider ‘’next step’’ options working with individual facilities/organisations.

We would love you to join us for this informative and hands-on CPD event. 7 hours CPD is offered for attendance including access to online learning resources and downloadable presentation handouts. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided.
