This is part of a series focused on providing palliative care education for staff working in residential aged care.

Target Audience: All non-clinical and clinical Residential Aged Care Home staff.


Education Overview:

This session provides an open and practical discussion about ageing, dying, and death in residential aged care. It explores how aged care professionals can support residents, families, and colleagues with empathy, confidence, and cultural sensitivity.

Participants will learn how to navigate end-of-life conversations and care planning, while fostering resilience and compassion within care teams. Emphasis is placed on building a deeper understanding of cultural, spiritual, and social considerations in palliative care

This bespoke education features Dr Tara Laabar a highly experienced, nurse, educator, and pioneer in palliative care in her home country Bhutan. After earning her PhD at UWA, she is now involved in planning for the Community Hospice in Bhutan.

Learning Outcomes:

1. How do I know when a resident is dying?

2. What should (or shouldn’t) I say?

3. Breaking the stigma – challenging common misconceptions.

4. Providing meaningful support in difficult moments.

5. When should I escalate concerns to clinical staff?

6. Understand the emotional and cultural complexities of ageing, dying and death in Residential aged Care.


Department of Health-End-of-Life and Palliative Care Education and Training Framework

The End-of-Life and Palliative Care Education and Training Framework is a tool outlining the essential knowledge and skills for healthcare professionals caring for those with end-of-life needs. It consists of three domains: Principles of Practice, Clinical Management, and Leadership/Management. Each domain's learning items are categorised into three expertise levels: Foundation, Consolidation, and Extension, forming a continuum of learning.
