Event description
Talkin' it Up Regional Youth Mental Health Forum

About this event

Being a teenager can be a pretty awesome time in our lives – it’s not without its struggles…..DO YOU KNOW?

Young people deal with and are affected by a range of mental health challenges which can affect many aspects of their lives including their education.

Young people are identified as the most likely age group to experience mental health struggles and are also least likely to seek help.

Young people are often ill informed and have limited access to accurate information about mental health and support networks.

The Regional Youth Mental Health forum returns for its sixth annual Talkin’ it Up event to provide high school students and young people the opportunity to engage with local organisations. The event is led by West Moreton Health with sponsorship and support from Ipswich Hospital Foundation, and support of Ipswich City Council, LIVIN, Queensland Department of Education, Ipswich Community Youth Service, Somerset Regional Council, Lockyer Valley Regional council and Anglicare Southern Queensland.

The event helps to increase:

Awareness of available supports for mental health issues.

Ability to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

Confidence to assist peers to access support services.

The days FREE program consists of mental health wellbeing workshops facilitated by local organisations, with the keynote presentation delivered by LIVIN, https://www.livin.org/ LIVIN deliver a mental health stigma reduction and motivational program the “LIVINWELL” program. The program has received overwhelming positive feedback at the previous Talkin’ it Up forums.

Information stalls from mental health and support services will be present on the day. Each high school or organisation can nominate up to 20 students ideally suited to grades 9, 10 and 11. These young people will have learned or be interested in learning more about mental health with a view to engaging positive mental health promotion. Each high school or organisation must provide supervision, minimum one supervising staff member to 10 young people. The school/organisation remains responsible for their young people during the entire event.

Catering is provided for participating young people and the supervising staff, with students given first preference. Vegetarian diets, lactose intolerance and gluten intolerances will be catered for, however students with other dietary requirements or those with dietary concerns should consider bringing their own food.

Places are limited so please register early to avoid disappointment.
