TalkAbout: Health

Health and wellbeing is always on the forefront of everyones minds but in practice it is difficult to cut through the clutter of all of the advertising and scary news stories to work out some of the ingredients we need to look after ourselves that doesn't interfere with our busy schedules.

Shane Brookman, Optometrist - Capital Eye, Barton

Did you know that the world is facing a global epidemic of eye problems, much of it because of our addiction to digital screens? Your sight is a gift and your eyes deserve the best. Shane will be sharing his secrets to seeing better and enjoying a lifetime of healthy vision. Learn what to eat for eye health and how to protect your eyes from digital screens. Your eyes are the best camera you'll ever own so you won't want to miss out on safeguarding your vision for the future.

Kal Ientle - Ki Acupuncture, Civic

Many stresses in our modern lifestyles and workplaces contribute to chronic, painful tension in our muscles. Whether you're an office worker or an athlete, your muscles are prone to the same type of dysfunction from poor postures and repetitive stress.

Dr Kal will be discussing how we earn our aches and pains over time, plus providing some practical (and unusual) tools for reversing the process. While aging may be inevitable, aging painfully isn't!

Kristen Pratt - Canberra Nordic Walking

What will it take to get our loved ones up and moving?

We know that walking would be good for their health and so do they, and yet that doesn't seem enough to get them moving. And that's because it's not! When you’re not feeling well, carrying too much weight, recovering from injury or suffering from a condition like Parkinson's Disease or cancer, even just walking a small amount seems like a monumental effort.

It’s well known that the secret to making any new change stick – such as moving more - is finding something that is convenient and that you enjoy, as well as being effective.

Kristen is going to talk about the fitness regime that has been keeping Scandinavian skiers trim since the 1930s. Nordic Walking is a great option for many people who aren’t so keen on gyms, don’t enjoy or are unable to run or jog, and are not comfortable cycling or swimming. The beauty of Nordic Walking is that it is affordable, fun, sociable, and can be done anywhere by anyone! Best of all – it is low impact, but highly effective as a total body exercise that is big on burn and easy on joints.
