Calligraphy and belief in Islam
About this event
Commencing with a contemporary batik painting from the MAGNT collection by the renowned Indonesian artist Amri Yahya, this presentation by Dr James Bennett, Curator of Asian Art and Material Culture, will explore the significance of calligraphy in Islamic art and faith, both from the perspective of modern and historical art practices.
The title of the talk is inspired by the famous passage in the Qur’an: ‘If all the trees on the earth were pens and the oceans were ink, yet these would not suffice to record the Words of God’.
