Description

Australia, Indonesia and the Future of Democracy

With Cynthia Banham & Jonathan Pearlman

A global slide away from democracy threatens to extend to Indonesia, Australia's northern neighbour. This shift could damage the already turbulent relations between the two nations. And it raises questions about the future of liberal democracy in Indonesia, Australia and around the world.

Cynthia Banham is a Sydney-based writer and visitor at the Australian National University’s School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet). She is the author of two books, A Certain Light, (Allen & Unwin, 2018) and Liberal Democracies and the Torture of Their Citizens, (Hart Publishing, 2017). She was awarded a PhD from the ANU in 2015. Cynthia was, until earlier this year, a Research Fellow at the University of Queensland. She is a former foreign affairs and defence correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald and has also worked as a lawyer.

Jonathan Pearlman is the editor of Australian Foreign Affairs and is a correspondent for the Telegraph (UK) and the Straits Times (Singapore). He previously worked at the Sydney Morning Herald, covering foreign affairs and politics from Canberra and Sydney. He has worked as a correspondent in the Middle East, as well as covering various international stories, including the 2008 US election and the violence in eastern Congo. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including Diplomat magazine, Good Weekend and the Australian Book Review, and he has been a Walkley Award finalist and a United Nations Media Award winner. He was born in Sydney and studied at the University of NSW and Oxford University.
