Take charge of bullying - parent without harmful stereotypes
Event Information
About this event
As a survivor of domestic violence, prejudice, discrimination and bullying both at home and in the workplace I know first hand how stereotypes in our media, marketing and advertising can be perpetuated at home and can put as in harm's way. Now we have research that proves that this is not just my unique experience, and it is time we all took charge of the problem. I acknowledge that my own ignorance, and the false belief that some of the stereotypes around me were real, played a part in this happening to me too. I don't want others to ever be in this situation as either a perpetrator or a victim. I dream of a world where we can live 'Unboxed' and be free of harmful expectations and limits imposed by others. This new world starts with our children at home.
Since this all happened in my life, I have learned everything I can about people, stereotypes and the causes. It is my life's mission to remove this harm from the world and helping our children is a fundamental step that all parents can impact for good.
There are seven key areas of impact that I believe we can address including stereotypes around gender and identity, abilities and life stages, socio-economics, race and culture, urban and rural differences, sexuality, and neuro-diversity.
In this introductory webinar, come and explore this topic with me including the science behind stereotypes and the potential for harm and impact for the long term. Using common media examples, identify and acknowledge your own bias and lead by example.
You will take away how to:
- Identify 10 key stereotypes that cause harm
- Understand the science
- Foresee and prevent the long term impacts
- Identify and acknowledge your own bias
- Know what to say to children (including those who are not yours)
- Complaining to authorities
This introductory webinar will take place Tuesday February 8th at 1pm AEDT (Melbourne, Australia time) and will not be recorded to allow for open and honest discussion.
