Event description

Description

Synergen Met, in collaboration with the University of Queensland, have created a world-first process to produce sodium cyanide on site for gold miners, replacing the need to transport, handle, and store the toxic chemical. This reduces both the risks and costs associated with the use of cyanide in gold mining.

The new process pioneered by Synergen Met uses nitrogen from the air to produce cyanide, as opposed to existing technologies which rely on ammonia as a source material.

The modular on-site production unit took out the 2014 IChemE Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemical and Process Engineering, as well as winning the Core Chemical Engineering category.

In conjunction with Lycopodium, design and construction of the modular processing plants is currently being undertaken, and the module is currently located at the UQ Long Pocket Campus.

Synergen Met and Lycopodium have generously agreed to host a tour for the Queensland JCEC, and give a unique insight into the world-first process.
