Event description

Description

The University of Queensland's School of Languages and Cultures invites you to attend the Symposium on Language Maintenance in the 21st Century.

The Symposium will explore some of the theoretical and practical issues related to language teaching and learning in the context of the highly multilingual Australian society.

The focus of the Symposium is to enhance cooperation between academics, teachers and policy makers. Our aim is to facilitate the translation of research findings into successful language practices and policies.

Scholars from diverse fields will discuss plurilingual pedagogies, multilingual background experience, practices and beliefs of tertiary level language learners, developments for Indigenous languages maintenance and the experience of a heritage language immersion kindergarten. This half day event will also include a round table, networking opportunities and afternoon tea.

We are delighted to have Dr Yvette Slaughter as the keynote speaker. She is Senior Lecturer at Melbourne Graduate School of Education and a Research Fellow in the Research Unit for Multilingualism and Cross- Cultural Communication (RUMACCC) in the School of Languages and Linguistics at The University of Melbourne. Her research interests include language policy, language education (policy and implementation), bilingual education and sociolinguistics.
