Event description

Description

This is going to be fun.

We're hosting NodeBots Day for 2017, ready and eager to get you all making web controlled robots with the joys of JavaScript!

If you've got no experience in robotics but know some JavaScript, don't worry, we'll help you along the way. Know all sorts of stuff? Come along and take on the challenge of hacking away at something new with like-minded peers!

You know you want to come and be part of Sydney NodeBots Day 2017!

You’ll build things, explore new stuff, meet new people and have loads of fun while doing it.

You’ll use JavaScript but also get to play with Arduinos, Servos, Sensors, Node.js, Johnny-Five, LEDs and more (currently seeing what other gear we'll have for people to play around with on the day!).

Who should attend?

Anyone who is interested in designing or building web connected physical things.

Do I need to be a developer?

Not really. You'll need to have passing familiarity with JavaScript - if you can get to "Hello, world" in a browser you'll find the day a load of fun and further develop your skills.

What do I need to bring?

Yourself and a willingness to learn and explore with others.

Bring your laptop and if you’ve got any hardware that you’ve been playing with (Arduinos, Robots etc) then you’re more than welcome to bring them too. If you’re totally new to hardware then we will have a few basic kits for you to play with (these will be limited, so if you'd like to guarantee you've got a kit, get either a NodeBot Scientist Kit or Robo Hacker Kit and you'll be able to take it home too!). We’ll also have some other components provided that you can borrow and use too.

Two of the ticket types come with kits that you can take home —

  • NodeBot Scientist Kit will teach you some fundamental electronics (and become the heart of a future robot)
  • Robo Hacker Kit which is a more serious kit and is a fully fledged robot

What will we do?

Already know your stuff and just wanna build your thing? Hang out with others interested in building stuff too and make that thing you've been wanting to build!

New to it all? PatCat will give a talk at the start of the day guiding anyone who is new to NodeBots through the basics of Arduino and NodeBots!

After that it’s up to you — get into a group with others or hack away solo. Our friendly volunteer experts will be there to give you a hand. PatCat will be especially excited if you come up with a wild scheme involving many different bits of tech in one bot.

What’s included?

We’ll provide you with a space to play, power, Wi-Fi and Internet access as well as some snacks through the day to keep you powering through your NodeBot masterpieces. We’ll have some components like LEDs, small servos and some other bits of kit that you can borrow to build things with. Want to make sure you've got all you need to build a bot and want to be able to take your creations home? See the different ticket types you can register for that'll come with take-home kits!

PatCat has some fun things people can experiment with including:

  • The ol' school retro Pebble watches — no longer available to buy, but we've got a few on hand you can borrow to try out for the day!
  • Particle Core kits — slightly more advanced than an Arduino with built-in Wi-Fi and a ready-to-go cloud service! We'll have a few available for you to try out!

Can I bring my kids? Is this a child appropriate event?

Children are more than welcome to attend and we've had 7-12 year old kids at all of our events who really enjoyed the day. The day isn't being specifically aimed at children and we know that keeping them interested for a whole day can be a challenge - but if anything is going to do that it's going to be blinking lights, moving robots and helping to build things! If we have enough then they can form their own team and take on the parents in a game of "Sumo Bot"...

If you have any questions about suitability for kids, please get in touch and we'll be more than happy to chat about it.

Who’s doing this?

Patrick Catanzariti (@thatpatrickguy) is the main organiser for the Sydney based event. He runs Dev Diner and is a tech tinkerer, web developer, Internet of Things enthusiast and emerging technology addict.

Damon Oehlman (@DamonOehlman) is also helping out with the organisation of the event and has been involved with plenty of NodeBots and JavaScript-themed events over the years. He'll be able to help you with issues throughout the day too :)

Sponsors!

  • Canva is being incredibly generous providing us with a great venue for the event. A HUGE thank you to them!
  • Online Laser Cutting is also being super generous and providing us with the laser cut parts for the SimpleBots people will be building on the day! If you need laser cutting done for any maker projects — these are the team to go to. They know their stuff!
  • Dev Diner will be providing some assorted bits of tech you can borrow and try out for the day!

Will there be equipment available for purchase on the day?

Possibly. We are looking to have a stock of simple gear (Arduinos, servos etc) that will be available for purchase. More information will be available as we get closer to the event depending on what stock we can get! To be certain you've got equipment, we'd recommend buying a kit that comes with equipment!

Code of conduct

We want NodeBots Day to be a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. We will not tolerate harassment or discriminatory behaviour at our events and will be enforcing the policy outlined in our Code of Conduct.
