Each week participants explore Pantsula and the cultural context of this distinct dance style that emerged during Apartheid in South Africa.

About this Event

Every Tuesday afternoon during Term 3, participants will learn and explore Pantsula with Dancer/ Workshop Leader Thuba Ndibali.

Pantsula is a distinctive dance style that emerged during Apartheid in South Africa. This energetic and spontaneous dance expressions of black townships continue to amaze and inspire young people across the world.

Zimbabwe-born dance artist Thubalethu Ndibali is an experienced Pantsula teacher who introduced this dance form to Shaun Parker & Company. In these one-hour weekly workshops, participants will gain important knowledge about the cultural context of Pantsula. Rooted in a spirit of empowerment and freedom, learning Pantsula will help to build the participant’s self-confidence. Through the learning of energetic, technical footwork, participants will benefit from a great physical and mental workout. In the intermediate level group, participants will develop their ability to retain choreography. The open class will open an opportunity for all dance lovers to gain a cultural understand of Pantsula dance while learning the movements and techniques. Thuba will also bring in hip-hop street flavour to “mix-up” the dance routines to ensure every class will be unique and fresh.

This BEGINNERS class is suitable for young people aged 8 - 12 years.

ABOUT THUBALETHU NDIBALIThuba Ndibali is a dancer and dance teacher. He grew up in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He was heavily influenced by the street corner dancers commonly known as Pantsula in Southern parts of Africa. With Pantsula being his signature style, when Thuba arrived in Australia in 2008, he was exposed to other styles such as popping, ticking, bonebreaking which were quite identical to Pansula. In 2010, he was recruited into the Boys Hip Hop in the Schools Spectacular. His passion for dance grew as he began participating in dance battles across Sydney and being actively involved in the street dance community. He then began formal training in 2013 in styles such as Contemporary, Latin American, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop for 3 intensive years to earn a Bachelor degree in Dance (2016). He has since appeared in commercials for Nike, Fitbit and teaches Pansula at YourHipHop Class. Thuba has also performed in Shaun Parker & Company’s TUT, the Jeans for Jeans campaign for curing childhood disease, was a workshop leader for BIGDANCE 2018, and a development dancer and understudy for KING. In 2018, Thuba was a featured dancer for Madiba the Musical which toured across Australia and New Zealand. In 2019, Thuba was featured in the South African City Press as a forefront choreographer in a new Pantsula move called “Pouncing cat”.
