Description

Professor Steven Cowley, theoretical physicist and international authority on nuclear fusion and astrophysical plasmas, President of Corpus Christi College Oxford, and Acting Director of the Oxford Martin School

Co-presented with ISS2017, hosted by the School of Physics at the University of Sydney

Fusion power is one of a very few sustainable options to replace fossil fuels as the world's primary energy source. Although the conditions for fusion have been reached, much remains to be done to turn scientific success into commercial electrical power. Fusion has progressed from the insight of Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington in 1920 and Fermi's speculations in 1946 to the threshold of fusion burn at JET at Culham and soon in the international experiment ITER.

The challenge of providing carbon free energy for the whole world is greater than ever. We need fusion. Professor Cowley will examine two key questions: What scientific questions must be resolved and how can we hasten the first fusion electricity?

THE SPEAKER:

Professor Steven Cowley FRS, FREng is a leading theoretical physicist, with a particular interest in nuclear fusion. He is President of Corpus Christi College and has joined the Physics Department at Oxford. He was recently appointed Acting Director of the Oxford Martin School. Prior to this, he was CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, based at Culham, Oxfordshire, leader of the laboratory there and part-time Professor at Imperial College, London. He also has a long and distinguished career at Princeton and UCLA behind him. Professor Cowley acts as an adviser to government, but also finds time to speak in schools; he has made a number of media appearances, including a very popular TED talk on fusion power.

Professor Crowley is a guest of the Professor Harry Messel International Science School (ISS) hosted by the School of Physics at the University of Sydney. The theme for ISS2017 is Future Power: The Energy Challenges, Opportunities and Solutions Ahead.
