Learn how City of Grand Rapids (USA) empowered 180,000 people to complete transactions at any time, on any device while cutting calls and improving customer service.

Today, delivering best-practice customer service online is the biggest challenge facing government. A recent study by Deloitte Australia revealed that, when successfully executed, the usability and financial benefits of empowering customers to self-serve online are tremendous. Deloitte estimate the service delivery cost for the digital channel at 40c per request, as compared to $6.60 per request for telephone, or $16.90 per request for face to face.

With increasing pressure to do more with less, the benefits of digital transformation for councils become clear. But how do local governments start this journey?

Jack Madans (USA - Code for America, OpenCities Inc) will deliver a keynote presentation about how well-designed digital services drive engagement and build stronger connections between the city and the community. Jack has worked with major US cities including City of Grand Rapids, City of Miami, City of Orlando and many more to redesign their online customer experience. Hear insights from his government service design playbook to help you deliver an iterative, user-centred and data driven website.

Ten minute talks opens the floor to representatives from cities and councils to share their digital service innovations.

Our panel discussion on accelerating digital transformation will explore how a website that doesn’t deliver end-to-end digital services is like an elevator that never leaves the ground floor. In this collaborative session, service design experts and digital government advocates will answer your questions about the technological and organisational challenges of accelerating the transformation of digital services.

Digital Services Academy Workshop will teach you how to use your website redesign as the proving ground for a new, organisation-wide customer experience strategy. We will share tools and practices for applying 21st century Digital Government principles, including redesigning your content, prototyping transactions, testing with users and much more. After the workshop, attendees will have prototyped a digital service, a real-time analytics dashboard, and an assessment of your current website's performance and experience.

The OpenCities Digital Services Academy is your chance to network with fellow digital advocates in local government. You'll leave with a post-event report outlining the key learnings to share with your organisation and put into action immediately.
