Description

In Australia, around one in seven 4-18 year old Australians will suffer from a mental illness each year.
Mental Health First Aid aims is to improve knowledge and confidence about mental health and wellbeing.
The Youth Mental Health First Aid program teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing
a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

When: 9.00am-5.00pm Thursday 11th and Thursday 18th May 2017 (2 day program)
Where: Milligan Community Learning & Resource Centre, 35 Milligan St, Bunbury WA 6230

COURSE CONTENT
Course participants learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis.
Developing mental health problems covered are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Eating disorders

Mental health crisis situations covered are:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm)
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours

ABOUT MHFA
Developed in 2001 by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm, Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until the appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course is based on the international MHFA Guidelines. Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.
