Event description
Students will be looking at sustainability in all aspects of the flying experience, from check-in, to take off.

About this Event

From recycling flight attendant uniforms to finding a way to fly aircraft on less jet fuel, our Sustainability In Aviation school holiday program with Virgin Australia will see high school students innovating, creating and designing to make flying as clean and green as possible. This program has been designed to get students looking at sustainability in all aspects of the flying experience, from check in, to take off, raising airline sustainability to the next level!

Whilst flying aircraft burns a lot of fuel, airlines are doing all they can to be as environmentally friendly as they can in other ways to minimise their impact on the planet. From using napkins made of recycled paper, to offering reusable straws and stirrers, airlines are starting to take action to improve their sustainability efforts in the air and on the ground.

Our Sustainability In Aviation program has been designed to get students looking at sustainability in all aspects of the flying experience from check in, to the lounge and in the air, taking airline sustainability to the next level. Using their STEM and design skills as well as critical and creative thinking, students will be innovating, creating and designing sustainable solutions for Virgin Australia in all aspects of their operation.

In this hands on, fast paced three day program students will be working on challenges ranging from recycling flight attendant uniforms, to tackling the environmental impact of airport operations, exploring future fabrics, learning about the science of inflight sleep and more. Throughout the program, students will also be hearing from members of the Virgin Australia team, exploring airline facilities and learning about how one of Australia’s largest airlines manages to carry over 25 million passengers each year.

Our Sustainability In Aviation program has been designed for students in grade 7-10 with an interest in aviation, STEM, design, sustainability and innovation. There is no prior experience necessary, all we ask is that students are eager to learn and innovate!

Frequently Asked Questions

What Do Students Need To Bring: We ask that students bring their own morning tea and lunch each day as well as a laptop or tablet if they wish to use one to work. We will be providing students with light snacks throughout the day as well as all the materials they will need throughout the program. We will also have iPads for students to borrow, but if they would prefer to work on their own device, we would recommend they bring it with them.

How To Get To The Venue: For the program we will be working out of the Virgin Australia Head Offices at 56 Edmondstone Road, Bowen Hills. There is street parking around the venue as well as a drop off zone in front of reception. The venue is also a short walk from the Bowen Hills train station and there is a bus stop right in front of the reception.

Airport Visit Throughout The Program: During the program we will be travelling to the Virgin Australia Cafe Lounge at Brisbane Domestic Airport for a morning of challenges out at the airport. We ask that students are dropped off and collected at the Virgin Australia offices in Bowen Hills and we will travel as a group to and back from the airport during the day. For the airport visit, students will be going through airport security so we ask that they please ensure they have no sharps in their bags and abide by standard airport security rules.

Will Students Be Working Alone Or In Groups: Students will have the option of either working by themselves or in groups that they are able to choose. We will have a series of challenges throughout the camp that will allow students to mix groups but it will be up to the students to choose their own group.

Pick Up And Drop Off Time: Our program will be running from 9am - 3pm each day but we will have the option for students to arrive from 8:30am and depart by 4pm if they wish to arrive early/stay late.
