Description

The warmer weather may be starting to appear but the memory of a long cold winter still lingers strongly in our minds. So too does the rising cost of our gas bills. For a long time fossil gas has been heralded as the cheaper lesser evil to other fossil fuels, coal and oil. With major changes to the volume of gas is exported outside Australia and a significant reduction in production forecast by 2025, what does the future hold for domestic consumers and how should we be adapting to these changes in gas price and supply? In this free presentation Tim Forcey will discuss the problems associated with Victorian Gas Program that is exploring for more gas and oil in Victoria. He will also some of talk about some of the myths put forward by gas industry in relation to the future of hydrogen as a fuel source. As home energy consumers, Tim will also focus on what he sees to be the alternatives for people heavily reliant on fossil gas as a major heat source for water, cooking and heating our homes. The rise of the 'all electric home' as a phenomenon has become a far more real and practical solution given the cost of solar panel and battery backup systems keep coming down. Combined with a greater range of energy efficient appliances and a better understanding of energy efficient behaviour, perhaps consumers already have the tools to adapt to coming changes in the energy environment. At a time when we need to be reducing our carbon emmissions to meet our international target obligations, moving away from fossil gas as a fuel source in many ways makes more sense than maintaining the staus quo.

Tim Forcey is an independent Energy Advisor and Researcher. He trained as a chemical engineer, and now focuses on the sustainable production and efficient use of renewable energy. He has experience with renewable heat and electricity, heat pumps, energy storage, fuel-switching, alternatives to fossil gas, methane emissions, energy efficiency, energy and carbon management, building and home energy, electricity, gas, oil, petrochemicals. He also convenes the highly successful facebook page 'My Efficient Electric Home' https://www.facebook.com/groups/996387660405677
