Supporting Your ... 'Real Life' Stories

Writing workshop with Louise Allan, KSP Scholarship Writer-in-Residence

This workshop is brought to you by the KSP Writers' Centre with support from the Shire of Mundaring. Tea and coffee provided.

Many people want to write their personal stories but hold back because of fear of writing about private matters, fear they will be judged, and fear of writing about other people. It’s such a shame because storytelling is a powerful way to find meaning and connect with others.

This workshop will cover the many good reasons for writing about our memories and lives, and how to conquer the fears that prevent us from doing it. We’ll also cover how to write a vivid picture of our personal experiences so that the reader feels they are there.

During the workshop, we’ll write short exercises to a couple of prompts. We’ll also look at how to draw a unique meaning from these experiences, so the story will remain with the reader long after they’ve read it.

About the Facilitator

While in development, Louise was awarded a Varuna Residential Fellowship and the manuscript was shortlisted for the 2014 City of Fremantle T.A.G. Hungerford Award. Louise is the 2018 recipient of the Tina Kane Emergent Writer Award.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is a bus stop directly outside the Centre on Old York Road. Parking is available in the brick driveway and in front of the hedge, also on the upper gravel level (to the right of the house) and along the street. Overflow parking can be found down the gravel driveway to the immediate left of the house (look for the No Thoroughfare sign); please drive down here slowly.
