Dr Karyn Carson is a Lecturer in Special Education as part of the School of Education at Flinders University. Dr Carson’s primary areas of research are in early literacy development in particular assessment, monitoring and instruction around precursory reading skills such as phonological awareness development, letter-sound knowledge, vocabulary development and so forth. Dr Carson is particularly interested in how vulnerable children can benefit most from various play-based and more direct approaches to early reading development.

Audience: Educators of Pre-School and Early School-Aged Children (4-6 year olds)

Event Title: Supporting Phonological Awareness Development in Preschool and Early School-Aged Children

Date: Monday 21st August 2017

Format for the session:

1.30pm Doors Open/Registration

2.00 - 3.00pm Session One

3.00 - 3.20pm Afternoon Tea

3.20 - 4.20pm Session Two

About this session:

Research demonstrates that the depth and breadth of phonological awareness (PA) and letter-knowledge skills children bring to beginning classroom reading instruction plays a significant role in fostering early reading success.

Supporting preschool and early years’ primary-aged children to understand that spoken words are comprised of different types of sound units such as syllables, onset-rimes, and individual sounds, as well as how to manipulate these units and link them to orthographic knowledge, is one way in which educators can ensure that children are being equipped to use an alphabetic decoding strategic when learning how to read.

This two-hour workshop will specifically focus on key principals, methodologies, and frameworks for effective research-based instruction in the area of PA for preschool and early school-aged children. Evidence-based analysis of goal development, sequential learning pathways, and resource selection will be applied to provided, as well as participants’ own, case-base scenarios.

Attendance certificates will be available for collection at the conclusion of the event.

Bookings due to close on 3rd August 2017. Minimum numbers are required for this event to proceed.
