Supporting Language and Literacy Following Early Childhood Trauma
Event Information
Description
(Can't make it? THIS EVENT IS ALSO AVAILABLE VIA LIVE WEBINAR - here)
It is estimated that at least one out of every five young children have experienced some degree of early childhood trauma. The impacts of these experiences are often un-noticed, until years later when the child begins to fall behind or have other difficulties in primary school.
However, early childhood teachers, educators and other support workers can profoundly change these outcomes.
This workshop will explore a range of simple and effective ideas for nurturing language and literacy development with little children who have experienced relational trauma, disruption and vulnerability.
This 1.5 hour workshop is for early childhood teachers, educators and other community support workers. It will be of interest to those who recognise and care about the long-term effect of their work with children aged 0-5. Interested parents and foster carers are also warmly welcomed and catered for.
Topics include:
-
What is relational trauma, why it is so prevalent, what it does to children, and why it's often missed.
-
What the research shows about the effects of relational trauma on language and subsequent literacy development.
-
The essential things young children need from adults to help restore their language and literacy capabilities following relational trauma.
