Description

If you’re working with or supporting someone who has no speech, little speech or speech that is difficult to understand, it can be overwhelming to work out how you can help them and what options are available. In this workshop, our experienced ILC Speech Pathology staff will discuss what Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is and how it can help someone with complex communication needs to get their message across. You’ll complete the workshop knowing that there is a wide variety of communication supports available and how you can be a supportive communication partner with the person you’re assisting.

Target audience: This introductory workshop is essential for support staff, group home staff, family members, people with communication difficulties and other professionals with an interest in supporting people with complex communication needs.

In this workshop you’ll learn:

- What does Complex Communication Needs (CCN) mean?

- What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?

- Who can benefit from AAC?

- Strategies for implementing AAC

- How to be a good communication partner

- Communication supports: what are the options for people who are literate? What are the options for people who have difficulties reading and writing? What are the options for people with fine motor difficulties?
