This workshop addresses one of the key challenges that both supervisors and students encounter: how to establish and maintain clear expectations in the supervision relationship. It firstly considers the nature of the supervision relationship, and explores the key factors that can contribute to misaligned expectations. It then describes a number of strategies that can be used by both candidates and supervisors to ensure that expectations are clearer. This includes:

• Tools and guides for setting expectations
• Strategies for reviewing/renewing expectations
• Strategies for dealing with issues arising from mismatched or unmet expectations.

The workshop involves peer interaction in the discussion of these strategies, and provides opportunities for reflection and for questions to be asked. This workshop will be offered in two versions: (1) for graduate researchers, and (2) for supervisors – please see the event listing for correct cohort details.
