Sometimes life takes us in wild and unexpected directions. When we've lost our sense of normalcy, sometimes all that we want is to Return.
At Sunday Assembly Canberra in March 2017, we will focus on the theme of Return. We have recruited a wonderful speaker to share his personal story with us.
Andrew Pike is a film historian, film distributor, and filmmaker. Andrew has been honoured with numerous awards including a Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Canberra.
Six years ago, in 2011, Andrew had open heart surgery. The operation saved his life, but gave him insight into the gulf that can exist between medical advances, and the subjective experiences of patients.
In particular, Andrew saw the lack of post-operative emotional and psychological care that is typically available to hospital patients. This inspired him to direct the documentary film Pumphead (currently in production), which is named after the colloquial name for patients who suffer high levels of anxiety, depression, loss of confidence, and similar troubles as the after-effects of invasive but life-saving cardiac surgery.
Andrew thinks that as well as healing organs and bodies, we should heal and nurture the other parts that make a person who they are. We should help them, as much as possible, to return to their normal lives.
Andrew Pike will be the keynote speaker at the March 2017 Sunday Assembly Canberra, helping us to reflect on the challenges faced by those who've undergone extraordinarily disruptive experiences.
As usual, we will curate a whole event around this theme of Return, including readings, personal reflection and songs.
