Event description

Description

You're invited to the Sydney University Law Society's 2018 Social Justice Conference! For the first time ever, SULS is partnering with globalHOME, the Sydney Medical Program's global health society to present a joint conference on global health and law. Expect food, top-notch academics, and interdisciplinary discussions about one of the greatest injustices of our time - global health inequity.

How can law protect and promote the health of all, especially the most vulnerable? How can law be an obstacle to global health equity, and what can be done about it? How does intellectual property law affect the price of essential medicines and the distribution of research? How does policy and trade laws help or hinder the fight against global Non-Communicable Diseases?

To answer these questions and more, the conference has convened a roster of internationally leading academics, including:

-Professor Roger Magnusson, Professor of Health Law and Governance at Sydney Law School and lead author of the public health law manual collaborating with the International Development Law Organisation, the World Health Organisation and Georgetown University.

-Dr Selina Lo, a medical doctor trained in international law who has worked as Medical Director of Médecins Sans Frontières' (Doctors without Borders') Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines in Geneva, as well as the Lancet, Clinton HIV AIDS Initiative, and USYD's Planetary Health Platform.

-Professor Lisa Bero, Director of the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre on Pharmaceutical Research and Science Policy, former Chair of the WHO's Essential Medicines Committee, and Chair of Medicines Use and Health Outcomes for Sydney University.

-Professor Kimberlee Weatherall, a leading professor of intellectual property law and trade, lawyer, and associate director of the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia.

-Dr Belinda Reeve, lecturer in public health law, former Law Fellow of Global Health Law at Georgetown, and co-founder of the Food Governance Node at the Charles Perkins Centre.

-Alexandra Jones, a lawyer leading the George Institute for Global Health's Food Policy Division with previous work in global tobacco control and health and human rights.
