Description

Have you always wanted to design your own garden but don’t know where to start?

From understanding your soil, to the direction of your garden, architecture and planting, Studio Earth has designed an interactive workshop with you in mind!

The best designer for your garden is you because you know your needs best and your budget. Take Emily Parson's guidance through the foundations of good design to help you realise your vision and you’re on your way to considered design for your yard.

Whether you’re a novice or a light green thumb, looking to design or enhance your front or back garden, learn the Golden Rules of garden design over this 3-hour course to help you achieve the garden of your dreams.

WHAT I WILL LEARN

The alkalinity of your soil (that's right we test) to help determine which plants will grow

How to determine your style to suit the architecture of your home

How to draw up basic plans and design your garden blueprint.

How to enhance what you already have or want to keep

WHAT WILL I BRING

A scaled drawing of the space is required as the last hour will be spent plotting the design elements.

"An accurately scaled plan of their garden site. Preferably scale 1:100 (1cm = 1m).
Sourcing options might be as follows, a site plan soured from either: builder, architect, surveyor, realestate agent, owner-measured or Google Maps.

Google Maps - Step 1:
Go to Google Maps at www.google.com.au/maps.
Type your address into the top left hand search bar and click the magnifying glass.
Click the ’Satellite’ square in the bottom left hand corner of the screen to toggle from the map to the aerial image.

Google Maps - Step 2:
Zoom in with the mouse to the location where your garden is situated. Ensure the whole garden is shown on the screen. As you use the mouse, you will notice that the scale bar in the bottom right of the screen changes. It's best to get this scale bar to indicate 1m.

Google Maps - Step 3:
The program allows you to measure items on your plan. To measure, right click on the screen and a menu will appear. Point the mouse at the first point of the item you wish to measure, click on Measure Distance. You can then click on a second point to get a distance. The screen will inform the length of the line you measured. To clear, right click and click Clear. To calculate an area, keep clicking around the edges of the area, ensuring that your last point returns to your first point. The screen informs you of the square meters of the area you chose.

Google Maps - Step 4:
To print click Ctrl and P at same time. This will activate the Print button on the top right of your screen. Simply click it to save the screen plan to your computer. Never opt for ‘fit to page’ as this will skew the scale bar that will print along with your plan. It will be saved as a pdf file which you need to bring to the workshop as a hardcopy. Keep trying reprints (going back to the mouse zoom action) if your printed scale bar doesn’t measure correctly on a ruler 1cm = 1m bar. Using a scale ruler you will then be able to measure your site and design things to scale within your site.

Disclaimer: plans produced that may not be accurately scaled can cause costly mistakes and are not recommended for construction or pricing purposes.
