Event description

Description

Yarra Libraries has joined forces with Madman Entertainment to launch a special guest talk and Studio Ghibli movie marathon as part of the Madman Anime Festival. A light lunch will be served at 12.00 noon.

Two films will be screened, Howls Moving Castle (PG) and Spirited Away (PG). Both films are multi-award winning Japanese animated fantasies written by renowned director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli - Hayao Miyazaki. These films are complex, alluring and pull us into imaginative and savage worlds.

To add to the festivities, Melbourne-born and internationally acclaimed academic, musician, filmmaker and composer Philip Brophy will speak to us about the charged undercurrent in these films in his talk - Disaster, Trauma & Reconstruction in Miyazaki’s Anime.

Join us for a relaxed session filled with food, fun and thanks to Madman Entertainment we will be handing out two guest passes to the Madman Anime Festival and a Studio Ghibli DVD to three special guests.
For all anime-lovers, manga-enthusiasts and Studio-Ghibli fans this session is a must. Book now!

10.00 – 12.00 PM First movie runs (1hr 59 mins) - Howls Moving Castle (PG)
12.00 – 12.30 PM Intermission and quick food break (30 minutes)

Philip Brophy curated the first major retrospective of manga artist Osamu Tezuka for the National Gallery of Victoria in 2006. The exhibition toured to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco the following year. In 2005, he was commissioned to write “100 Anime” for the British Film Institute in London. In previous years he has curated film retrospective programmes for the Melbourne International Film Festival on Tezuka (1995) and Studio Ghibli (1997). He interviewed Hayao Miyazaki in Tokyo for the exhibition he curated on Japanese and American animation for the Museum of Contemporary Art, “Kaboom!” (1993). He has been published extensively in international journals on anime and manga.
