Fire engineering is underpinned on the fire safety strategy of a building and structure. The knowledge of how a structure performs in real fires is crucial to the understanding of the overall structural fire performance. This course will talk about Structural Fire Engineering, the engineering discipline of how structures behave in fires.

This course will explain the fundamental principles of structural fire resistance of different building materials, their strengths and weakness and how their structural form will affect their fire resistance. The assumptions and misconceptions that are in built in the BCA about fire resistance will also be discussed.

This will provide better understanding for opportunities for design optimisation for fire protection and also critical areas to improve the design for real structural robustness.

Understanding these aspects of Structural Fire Engineering [SFE] will improve the design strategy of the building and expose the true fire resistance of the structure, ensuring a fire strategy and building design is appropriately developed in response. Understanding what is possible and what is acceptable can support Building Surveyors/Certifiers in making informed decisions.

  • Structural Fire Engineering for Steel buildings, Concrete buildings and Mass Timber buildings (CLT etc);
  • Red flags, traps and watch-it’s;
  • Limitations of Structural Fire Engineering / what Structural Fire Engineering isn’t;
  • Site considerations;
  • Integration of structural fire engineering with the overall building fire safety strategy


The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the core principles of Structural Fire Engineering, without being overloaded with technical detail. Attendees will come away with a good understanding of what is possible to achieve using Structural Fire Engineering and an ability to identify sub-standard analysis methods. This will enable attendees to have greater rigour around assessing a fire safety strategy and therefore manage their risk exposure when considering or approving building designs that adopt structural fire engineering.


This webinar will be delivered as an interactive, facilitator-led workshop with relevant project examples and case studies.

Dr Linus Lim (Technical Director at Holmes Fire) has provided fire engineering and structural fire engineering designs for a vast number of commercial, retail, heritage, residential and infrastructure projects. Linus has also worked throughout the UK and Europe as a Structural Fire Engineer with a focus on steel-framed high rise commercial buildings.
