No second chances with Wallabies’ World Cup on the line against Uruguay

The Wallabies must bounce back straight away against Uruguay on Saturday afternoon (3:15pm AEST) to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

After Michael Cheika’s men suffered a heartbreaking 29-25 loss to Wales last Sunday, the Wallabies can’t afford another slip up against the South Americans who are ranked No 18 in the world.

The Wallabies have rung the changes for their penultimate pool match, with Cheika going against calls to play close to his top team by making 12 personnel changes to the starting XV.

On Wednesday, former Wallabies coaches Bob Dwyer and John Connolly called for Cheika — and his fellow selectors Scott Johnson and Michael O’Connor — to pick their best side and start preparing for a possible quarter-final clash against England.

But like four years ago when he rotated his entire starting side for their clash against Uruguay in Birmingham which ended in a 65-3 win for Cheika’s men, the Wallabies are taking a cautious approach to their third pool match.

Interestingly, though, playmakers Nic White and Christian Lealiifano have been restored as the Wallabies halves pairing, with last weekend’s playmaker Bernard Foley dropped.

“It’s a chance to give some guys who haven’t played any footy yet an opportunity to play,” Cheika said.

“We were always going to use our whole squad.

“At the same time also we wanted to pick a side more on the ball-carrying front, some bigger bodies in the back row and, of course, with Tevita (Kuridrani) coming back in, a different look with Matt To’omua, two bigger style of players in the centres.”

Prop Allan Alaalatoa, captain Michael Hooper and outside back Dane Haylett-Petty are the sole survivors from last weekend’s loss.

Teenage sensation Jordan Petaia will become the youngest Wallaby to ever debut at a World Cup after being named on the left-wing.

His naming comes after a torrid run of misfortune with foot and hamstring injuries.

“There’s not that many guys that get to make their debut in a World Cup, so he is blessed with the opportunity,” Cheika said of the 19-year-old.

“He has got a couple of very experienced campaigners next to him in Dane and Kurtley, so he’ll have plenty of experience around him to talk him through.

“You wouldn’t know that he’s a teenager, the way that he carries himself around the team.”
