Event description
Stories of Strength uses the power of storytelling to develop students' wellbeing, resilience and understanding of their community

About this Event

** Please note this is a two day workshops, participants will be required to attend two sessions on Thursday 1st and Thursday 8th October, 10am-3pm **

This workshop is suitable for young people aged 14-17 years

Stories of Strength follows a long line of community arts oral history projects that Outloud (formerly known as Bankstown Youth Development Service) created for their space in Bankstown. In 2019 Community Activities Lake Macquarie (CALM) was successful in securing a grant from the Department of Industry, Innovations and Science to deliver the Stories of Strength program in Lake Macquarie in partnership with Outloud.

The project shows that storytelling is a form of communication. It connects us with our humanity, and is a tool to celebrate culture and language, and share knowledge across generations. Students will work with diverse cultural communities, gain insight into the complexities of people’s lived experience, and question how this interacts with the broader narratives perpetuated through the media.

Through these stories, students gain a deeper insight of the people who live in their community, and are better equipped to identify, relate to, and understand social cohesion and harmony. Ultimately, the project aims to inspire young people to stand united against forces of hate, violence and fear through positive stories of strength and resilience.

Participants are guided through the process and principles of interviewing ethics of interviewing, interview and questioning techniques, how to edit interviews using audio‐editing software, and how to create compelling audio stories.

Participants learn:

  • Practical skills in media, research, scripting, editing and new software to create your own podcast episode.
  • Workshop issue of identity, belonging and the traditions of storytelling and how these can apply in your own lives.
  • Interview techniques that explore morals, ethics and ‘knowing your subject’ To develop engaging, dynamic content with a clear end product .

Catering will be provided, please advise if any dietary requirements.
