STEP Queensland branch is pleased to continue its lecture and networking series for early career professionals in 2019.

The lecture topics are aimed at professionals with less than 5 years' experience, however all professionals are welcome to attend.

Each event provides an opportunity for networking and developing relationships.


Topic: Estate Planning -Testamentary trusts:

What are they, why do we have them, what can go wrong?

Drafting Enduring Powers of Attorney – tick and flick, right? Wrong!

To the uneducated drafting a power of attorney is simply ticking the boxes and signing on the dotted line.

This session will dispel that myth and discuss the key considerations required when preparing an enduring power of attorney for your client including the questions you need to ask your client and the inclusion of special terms.

We will also look at recent case law and discuss practical examples of drafting issues.

Juanita Maiden - MacDonnells Law

As leader of the MacDonnells Law wills and estates team across the Brisbane and Cairns offices, Juanita’s experience includes succession planning, preparation of wills and powers of attorney, trusts and asset protection, complex estate administrations and contentious estate litigation matters such as family provision applications and applications for removal of executors.

Juanita was recognised as a Recommended Lawyer in the 2018 Doyle's Guide listing of Leading Wills and Estates Litigation Lawyers – Queensland.

Juanita is in her 3rd year as a committee member of STEP Qld and as a co-author has had her work published in the STEP Australia Newsletter.

Before joining MacDonnells Law Juanita held senior corporate roles. With this experience, Juanita brings a strong sense of business acumen and commerciality to her practice.

Outside of the office, Juanita serves as Chairperson of the AFL Queensland Tribunal, is mum to a livewire 6 year old and wife to a broken down footy player.

How do I join STEP?

  • Those with less than 5 years' relevant experience can become a member of STEP through the Education Route and progress from STEP Affiliate to STEP Associate and finally to Full STEP Member.

  • Credit points can be gained through the completion of modules with our Accredited Education Partners.

  • Those with more than 5 years' relevant experience can join STEP through the Qualified Practitioner Route.

Can I pay via EFT or cheque?

Unfortunately, no, STEP Queensland is only able to receive credit card payments through the EventBrite system. EventBrite will send you a receipt and ticket when you register. Please consider this your invoice.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, we will have your details on file and your name badge ready for collection.

Is my registration/ticket transferable?

Unfortunately your ticket cannot be transferred to another member.

I RSVP'd that I would attend in person but something has come up - can I attend remotely?

Yes, information about to attend remotely will be sent the day prior to the seminar to all registered attendees.

Will the materials be sent around in advance?

If the speaker provides the materials in advance they will be circulated the day prior to the seminar.

I have a season ticket, do I need to RSVP?

It would be appreciated if you did RSVP if you intend to attend in person. This assists with accurate numbers for catering. As a season ticket holder you will always recieve the recording of the seminar after the event and you are always welcome to attend remotely.
