Event description

Description

Our company, Future Thinkers for the 21st Century is offering three, linked STEM Design Thinking Workshops during the coming holiday period.

They are scheduled from 9-12 noon at the Medowie Sports and Business Centre in Medowie, situated in the beautiful Port Stephens area.

While each session is focused upon connecting and linking Digital Technologies & STEM/STEAM within a Makerspace environment, the first session will specifically link Digital Technologies to STEM ideas and concepts.

The second and third sessions will focus on planning and programming for Stem Design Thinking K-8.

Our company 'Future Thinkers for the 21st Century' is endorsed to provide NESA Registered Professional Development for teachers accredited at Proficient Teacher Level.

Completing all the Future Focused Learning : STEM Design Thinking workshops will contribute to a total of 9 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing the standards descriptors 1.2.2, 2.2.2, 3.4.2 & 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation.

Teachers will be assisted to focus upon practical activities and ideas which have the potential to inspire their students to empathize- define-ideate- model or prototype and then test their thinking.

In practice, the design process is a structured framework for identifying challenges across many curriculum areas, gathering information, generating potential solutions, refining ideas, and testing solutions.

FACTS & QUESTIONS

While the first session is really for teachers who have very little knowledge of Digital Tech, the next two are linked to each other (and refer back to the 1st session). The workshop will also be dependent upon the needs of the group's paticipants.

We will send out a GOOGLE Form Survey next week- to work out those needs.

Please checkout the website https://www.futurethinkers21stc.com/ which lists many of the different areas we can potentially cover in the 2nd & 3rd sessions with the emphasis upon Programming and Planning.

FAQs- I'll add these as we go along so please keep your questions coming in via email

5. ARE THE SESSIONS LINKED- should I book in for them all

Thanks for asking about the sessions.

While the first session is a stand alone, however, we do refer to the 'DT Tools' we had already looked at in this 1st session when we are discussing programming and planning in the 2nd & 3rd sessions.

It can stand alone but it isn't STEM Design Thinking - it's really just about integrating Digital Technology Tools. While these tools support a STEM program across the curriculum STEM Design Thinking is the integral part of STEM teaching. We will also discuss other tools in the subsequent sessions- 2 & 3.

So- if you are not at all familiar with DT tools- come to the first session- we have so many great tools to show you -how they work and integrate across the curriculum. Participants can play, explore and we will answer your questions. Plus we will then help you understand their link to STEM Design Thinking.

If you can- also attend the next few sessions as they will tie in to the first session as well as integrate across the curriculum.

After all- checking out and exploring these DT resources- beats a salesperson, who has more than likely never been a teacher- showing you something they want you to purchase rather than something you'd like to purchase and after attending these sessions, you will know & understand what works well with kids and your class.

HOWEVER-

If you are a DT expert i.e. know all about Makey Makeys, LittleBits, Arduinos, Pipers, STEM Makerspace Tasks, Hummingbirds, Neurons, Circuit Scribe, Circuit Chibitronics, Spheros and OzoBot Evos etc etc...... and know all how they 'fit' into an integrated across curriculum plan- the first session isn't for you.

Though the 2nd and 3rd session may suit you well as these are all about linking STEM Design Thinking across the curriculum.

6. SHOULD I BOOK IN FOR ALL-

While the first session is really for teachers who have very little knowledge of Digital Tech, the next two are heavily linked to each other (and refer to the 1st session). Aso, the content will be dependent upon the needs of the group as we will send out a GOOGLE Form Survey next week- to work out those needs.

Checkout the website https://www.futurethinkers21stc.com/

-which lists many of the different areas we can potentially cover in the 2nd & 3rd sessions with the emphasis upon Programming and Planning.

7. When booking in- Is EventBrite able to take a single booking for all the events / sessions?

EventBrite separates their events and so each one needs to be paid separately. In a way it's probably a good idea for teachers attending all sessions, to register separately for each session, because NESA separate them too when participants apply for accreditation.

So, when the accreditation information goes into the system, teachers who have attended two sessions, will get two separate 3 hr blocks of accreditation.
