Description

STEM Design Challenge: The helping hand (Bright Minds Years 3-5)

This student-centred, engineering design task requires students to design and build a devise that lets you grab different objects and drop them into a container that’s at least 50 cm away. Students will engage fully with the design process as they build, test, evaluate and redesign their device. Key themes of levers and mechanical squeezing systems will be emphasised.

Location: Queensland Academies, Science, Mathematics and Technology campus

Date: Saturday, 3 March, 2018

Time: Workshop 2 : 12.00 – 2.30 pm

Cost: $50.00

Capacity: 24

Students are required to wear comfortable clothes, enclosed shoes, with hair tied back, and bring a drink and a snack. All other materials are supplied

This workshop seeks to:

  • explicitly explore the concept of function
  • strengthen creativity skills and,
  • provide students with the opportunity to develop research skills including those associated with observing.

Years 3 and 4
Knowledge and Understanding
Recognise the role of people in design and technologies occupations and explore factors, including sustainability that impact on the design of products, services and environments to meet community needs(ACTDEK010)
Investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product or system (ACTDEK011)
Process and Production Skills
Critique needs or opportunities for designing, and explore and test a variety of materials, components, tools and equipment and the techniques needed to produce designed solutions (ACTDEP014)

Years 5 and 6
Knowledge and Understanding
Examine how people in design and technologies occupations address competing considerations, including sustainability in the design of products, services and environments for current and future use (ACTDEK019)
Investigate characteristics and properties of a range of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment and evaluate the impact of their use (ACTDEK023)
Process and Production Skills
Critique needs or opportunities for designing, and investigate materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to achieve intended designed solutions (ACTDEP024)
