Event description

Description

Families and Carers

“Staying Connected When Emotions Run High is an intervention for families, foster families and friends who support someone (aged 12yrs to 100 years) who has emotion dysregulation or other related conditions. Diagnosis of the person may include: depression, anxiety, psychosis, personality disorder, school refusal, drug and alcohol misuse, intellectual disability or other.

The intervention is aimed at parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, partners, young carers (16yrs and over), friends and foster families supporting those who experience:

  • relationship problems

  • difficulties managing changing emotions and strong or overwhelming feelings

  • sometimes behave in a way that makes them a danger to themselves or others

This initiative empowers families with relationship skills, knowledge and hope. The “fictional” characters in the film demonstrate the “Four Carer Dances” inviting families to identify their role in the relationship process. The Five Key Relationship Strategies are introduced to assist family members in being A “Good Enough” Carer. The “Good Enough” Carer then demonstrates putting safety first in scenarios when distress and risk escalate.

Facilitators:

Dr Annemaree Bickerton (Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatrist NSW Health) and

Toni Garretty (Team/Clinical Coordinator Family & Carer MH Program ISLHD)
