Event description

Description

The Lecture will be held at Babcock’s Australasian Regional Support Centre at Adelaide Airport, where Search and Rescue operations are conducted from (see map below).

The base visit will encompass the operations and support, the tasks conducted, where and how they operate. We will see and talk about how the aircraft are utilised to the full. We will meet some of the crews and look at the equipment being used to conduct rescues and medical missions, and equipment for police operations. It will be a fully interactive visit with time for questions throughout, an evening in the life of a rescue helicopter base.

Speaker

Kevin Berry

Pilot, MAC State Rescue Helicopter Service & Retired military helicopter pilot

At the tender age of 12, Kevin first flew upside down in a Chipmunk! Then followed many years flying gliders in the Air Training Corps before joining the Royal Air Force. As an Avionics Technician in the RAF he started travelling the world whilst repairing Hercules and Tornado aircraft. This immersion in aviation naturally lead to him wanting to fly professionally, which the RAF was happy to accommodate. After 5 years in the training machine flying Chipmunks (again), Tucano, Gazelle and Wessex, Kevin was finally released on to his first operational type flying counter terrorism ops in Northern Ireland. He then progressed to Search and Rescue duties in Devon, UK, flying the queen of the skies, The Seaking. After many, many rescues and the award of an AFC and a tour in Iraq, Kevin moved on to flying SAR Ops in Cyprus on the Griffin (Bell 412). This was the culmination of a glorious 24 year RAF career with a well earned period of retirement. Due to popular demand he was called back to flying on the Egyptian oil rigs, where due to lack of purpose he searched for another SAR position in Australia. Kevin's search lead himto the base here in Adelaide 8 years ago, where he has been blissfully happy since, helping the sick and injured of SA, and catching a few crooks too.
