State Funeral Service to celebrate and commemorate South Australian football legend Mr Russell Ebert OAM
About this event
South Australians will celebrate the life of football great and four-time Magarey Medallist, Mr Russell Ebert OAM at a State Funeral Service on Tuesday, 16 November 2021 at Alberton Oval, Alberton at 11.00am, gates open from 9.00am.
Hosted by the State Government, the funeral will commemorate Russell Ebert’s life, including his extraordinary football career as arguably the greatest player in the 151-year history of the Port Adelaide Football Club, and his decades of work in the local community leading social causes.
Born and raised in the Riverland of South Australia, Russell played a club-record 392 games for the Magpies in the SANFL between 1968-1985, with a season at North Melbourne in the VFL in 1979. He won three premierships and six best and fairest awards at Port Adelaide, was a member of the Australian and SANFL football halls of fame and was recently elevated to 'Legend status' in the South Australian Sport Hall of Fame.
After his football career, he continued to give back to the South Australian community, educating young people about respectful relationships and ending domestic violence against women. He was also a passionate supporter of children living with disabilities and was an ambassador for Novita and the Outback Odyssey, which, during Russell's involvement, raised more than $1 million for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
