This session is an orientation to help newcomers to the startup scene get acquainted with the exciting world of tech in Sydney. We will give you the inside scoop on key events/meetups to attend, people, companies, VCs, blogs, incubators, programs, hot issues, and more. Finding your MVP: how to turn your idea into a startup

BlueChilli founder and CEO Sebastien Eckersley-Maslin will take you through a number of exercises to help better understand your user and refine the tech you need built. You'll learn how to find your unique selling proposition, identify your various customers, and scope out the technology required. By the end of this session, you'll be well on your way to creating your own MVP.


Socially minded businesses: why they matter in the long run

Tia Saunders is the prior Co-Founders and Co-Ceo of Australia’s largest and fastest growing textbook rental company, which after two years she has successfully exited. Tia was instrumental in helping secure venture capital at a $5m valuation after 9 months of launch the company, this lead the founders to Silicon Valley and landed Zookal as one of the top ten startups of the year for BRW magazine. Tia has also founded Australian Collaborative Entrepreneur Society (ACES) and Social Startup48 a kick starter weekend event to help increase the number of social enterprises in Australia. Tia won the 30 under 30 entrepreneur of the year for her work in the startup community. She now consults to companies and NFPs and recently joined a new startup, Vimbra, to promote free and open debate.

First impressions count: nailing the pitch for investors, customers and staff

To get funded, win customers and appeal to top talent you have to have a compelling story. ATP Innovations CEO and Sydney Angels founding member Hamish Hawthorn will share the knowledge he’s gained helping hundreds of early-stage companies polish their pitches. You'll learn the framework with which to build a great pitch and how to effectively communicate your core value proposition and draw people into your vision. Located in the historic train warehouse of the National Innovation Centre, ATP Innovations is Australia's largest incubator with a diverse portfolio of 50 companies in the life sciences, software and engineering sectors, and over the last six year, these companies have raised over $100 million from investors.


Fishburners startup Q&A: chat with resident startups

Fishburners welcomes you into our community of tech entrepreneurs for the afternoon of Startup Walkabout. As Australia's largest co-working space for tech startups, you will hear from multiple founders as they share their journeys to becoming an entrepreneur, and the insights and experiences of growing their tech startup. With over 180 founders and 120 startups you will be exposed to a variety of business models across a range of industries. Learn about the daily challenges and emerging opportunities open to Australia's tech entrepreneurs, and what it takes to drive accelerated business growth with limited resources. It will be a conversational and interactive session.
