Event description

Description

Fundraising in the not-for-profit (NFP) sector can be a hard gig – it’s a crowded space and there’s a plethora of organisations jostling for our donations. In 2011, out of her own personal desire to network and improve her professional skills, Grace established NFP Connect Hunter, a monthly coffee group to connect those working in the not-for-profit/charity sector. After a couple of catch-ups, she realised that she wasn’t alone in the need for support and resources.

From its humble beginnings involving six peers, she introduced guest speakers and the networking events organically grew to an average of 50 individuals working in the sector attending a monthly breakfast. Knowing there was a lot more NFP Connect could do to support the community, Grace took a leap of faith to find out if NFP Connect had a bigger role to play than just the monthly events. She resigned her role as a fundraising manager and went to the market, researching issues faced by those working in the NFP sector, what would support them to move forward and the part NFP Connect could play in all of it. As a result NFP connect has extending its offering to include on online directory, workshops and a community impact program.

With the help of a social enterprise incubator and a clear need in the sector, NFP Connect has gone from strength to strength. Grace was awarded 2014 Lake Macquarie Young Business Person of the Year and for her work with NFP Connect and was named 2015 Lake Macquarie Citizen of the Year. Bring your lunch and learn from this social innovator doing good things in the Hunter.

About Startup Stories

Startup Stories takes place every Thursday from 1pm at University of Newcastle's coworking space Three76 Hub on Hunter Street. Over BYO lunch, a startup founder talks candidly about their experience as an entrepreneur and business owner – the highs, the lows, the wins, the mistakes, the whole enchilada. Startup Stories provides real-life examples of the different stages of the startup journey, creating a forum for startups to share and learn but also for the community to see tangible evidence of entrepreneurship making a difference in our region.
