Description

Entrepreneurs don't always stick to the first path they choose and often the reason they achieve success is down to their ability to roll with the punches and think quickly on their feet. Startup Lounge host Chris Rolls is a prime example. Chris has built and exited four businesses including SCODY Performance Wear, First Class Accounts and Rental Express, a technology enabled property management business with over $2.5billion of real estate under management. In 2016, Chris went on to found VC fund PieLAB Venture Partners. And now he's the host of the Startup Lounge ...

This month Chris will be putting Ben Pullen and Mark Gill in the hot seat to find out what makes these Brisbane-based entrepreneurs tick.

Ben co-founded business service provider Startel Communications in 2006 and grew that business both nationally and internationally before selling to London-based mobile network Truphone in 2010.

He then co-founded another telecom company, Vaya which disrupted the retail mobile environment with a “low cost, SIM-only, online only, no contract” model which attracted over 200,000 regular subscribers in Australia in 5 years. In 2016 the business was sold to Amaysim Ltd (ASX:AYS) in an $80 million transaction.

Ben currently holds interests and board positions in a number of mature and start-up businesses in a range of industries, from telecommunications to hospitality, outsourcing, fashion, and bio-medical across Australia, Singapore and The Philippines.

Mark Gill is one of the three founders of Brisbane based Venture Capital firm Talu Ventures. Talu recently exited ThreatMetrix, an Australian born technology company, which sold for over $1billion. Apart from the founder, Mark was the longest serving board member enjoying a ten year association with the business guiding the Australian founders on a journey that would lead to one of the largest technology exits for Australian founders and investors in recent history.

He has 30 years of experience in the technology sector including ten years in venture capital investing, with a strong background in hardware and software engineering. Mark oversees all aspects of Talu’s IT and Telecommunication investments.

Prior to venture investing, Mark held various roles with a central theme of building organisations to deliver technologies to the global market. He has twice been CEO of growing Australian technology companies that have successfully completed trade sales to multinational organisations. He has lived and worked in the USA running global sales for a fast growing telecom software company. Mark remains on the Board of a number of technology companies both here and in the US and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Doors open at 5.30pm - grab the popcorn and settle in for some show stopping entrepreneurial tales that could be the start of something big.
