Paint a starry night, take A Trip to the Moon, search the stars and become a scientist at Lake Mac STEAM's highlight event. Food truck and dinner options will be available to purchase.

Bookings for all activities via tickets below.

Please note: this program will be cancelled in the event of wet whether. All ticket holders will be notified.

Star gazing with the Newcastle Astronomical Society

See the stars in a whole new way with the Newcastle Astronomical Society.

Once the sun goes down visitors can meet members of the Newcastle Astronomical Society, ask questions and get a close up look at the stars through telescopes

Science on the Big Screen

From 6.30pm relax under the stars and enjoy a combination of science and art on the big screen.

At 6.30pm view, the 1902 film A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès. See where special effects and science fiction began in this short film about a group of astronomers who go on an expedition to the Moon. The film runs for 14 minutes and will be screened twice.

From 7.15pm learn something new with largest science film festival in the southern hemisphere, SCINEMA International Science Film Festival, showcasing the best science feature, short, documentary, animated and experimental films from filmmakers around the world. The festival screening will run for 2 hours. Check out the full playlist here.

SMART Science - BOOKED OUT

Join the University of Newcastle’s SMART Science team for interactive shows and hands on activities.

Shows, followed by activities at 3pm, 4pm and 5pm

SMART Science Show: This ‘cool’ show (196 degrees below freezing!) explores the physics and chemistry of matter (solids, liquids, gases) using Liquid Nitrogen. SMART presenters inspire and involve audience members with science through interactive demonstrations, chemical reactions and engaging experiments.

Hands-on Activity (post-show): 2019 National Science Week’s theme is ‘Destination Moon: more missions, more science’. To explore this theme, participants will make and test paper straw rockets, and circular wing gliders, experimenting with the forces of flight and gravity.

Starry Night Painting Workshop - BOOKED OUT

In in June 1889 Vincent Van Gough made a swirling colourful starry night famous. Join in a 30 min painting workshop and create your own starry night. Suitable for adults and children.
